Handmade_baby_bouquet_pink

About ten years ago I came across an online gift company specialising in bouquets, which look like flowers but were made from baby socks. I thought they looked fab so I ordered one to be delivered to a client of mine who had jut had a baby boy. I remember them saying they thought it was real and it took them a few days to realise what it actually was.

I always remember how great it was to come up with an alternative gift, and seeing as the last few years I’ve turned my hand to handmade gifts more and more, and with two new additions coming to my family I thought I would have a go at making one of these myself. Although they can take a little while to make, like any handmade gifts, they really stand out and I think make for a very alternative gift.

I had already made them before I decided to start a blog so I don’t have pictures of the clothes I used. You could use any baby items from socks and flannels to onesies. For this pink bouquet I used:

  • 2 pairs of mittens
  • 2 hats
  • 2 pairs of socks
  • 1 vest
  • 1 onesie
  • 1 pair of trousers
  • 1 top
  • 3 muslin cloths

In addition to these you will need:

  • Bamboo skewers
  • Frogtape, or cellotape and green florist tape
  • Coloured tissue paper (for the paper flowers)
  • Floral foam (optional)
  • Floral gift box (optional)

You roll up each baby item so they resemble flowers of some kind, usually roses (this takes a bit of practice), and then fix the skewer to the item and use the tape to fix the two together and go all the way down to the bottom of the skewer so it looks like a flower stem.

The best way to see how to make these is to watch them being made. I trawled through a lot of YouTube tutorials but found these two to be the most helpful and easiest to understand.

I also made some really pretty paper flowers which are so easy to make (tutorial here), and I think they really make the bouquet. You could make a very cheap but full bouquet by just using baby socks and bulking it out with plenty of paper flowers.

Once I had made each flower I made them into an arrangement by pushing them into the floral foam, which I had cut to size and placed into the bottom of a floral gift box. I then added a ribbon and they were complete. This step is optional as you could just as easily hand tie the bouquet with a ribbon.

As I have been suffering with a polyneuropathy which has really affected my hands, this took me ages, but I am really pleased with the final result and think it is fab.

I now have a lovely new baby niece so these pretty pink clothes will be going to her, and it’s lovely that her mum will be able to enjoy them for a bit first.
