How to co-ordinate cards and gift wrap

Matching cards and gift wrap isn’t exactly what we always think of when wrapping a gift for someone, but it really adds a wow factor to your gift. Spending a little bit of time thinking about how to present your gift will go a long way.

But we don’t always have the time, and quite often we think about wrapping at the last minute, does that sound familiar? This was an issue that I had, I was never prepared and was always racing around at the last minute trying to throw something together. But there’s a really easy way to have just what you need, and even better, it will look fab!

Create a stash of cards and wrap

To ensure you always have a range of gift wrap on hand you want to start building a stash. Try looking for similar colours and themes to start with, for example pinks and whites such as mine here, and then expand these to other colours and styles.

Start collecting cards and gift wrap when you are out and about, or browsing online. There’s no reason to wait for birthdays and occasions to come around, if you buy when you see them you will always have enough on hand.  Here are some good places to look:

  • Garden centres; they are great for finding unusual papers and cards
  • eBay and other online sites. My favourite papers are from Dovecraft, which I find are usually cheaper on eBay and there’s a great selection.
  • Hobbycraft is a great place to start, as they also have a great range of craft papers, cards and card making kits as well.
  • Costco often do fantastic boxes of cards and really cheap wrapping paper. You buy in bulk but you will have a great selection always on hand and the boxes are really nice for keeping all your cards and accessories in. There are a number of Costco’s opening up around the country now; you will need a membership though.
  • Craft fairs and fetes are also a good place to pick up something more unusual and often handmade.

Additions

Once you start putting together a selection of cards and gift wrap, you want to start picking up additional bits and pieces to make those final touches, such as pretty ribbons and tissue paper. Many of these can be pretty cheap, if not free!

Here are some suggestions:

  • Tissue paper in various colours; save any pieces which come with packaging or from gifts you’ve been given. The smallest amount can always be re-used. Purchase packs in various colours; bulk buying can often be far cheaper.
  • Ribbons in various colours, sizes or lengths. Save ribbons from presents and any packaging. You can also pick up great deals online. I recently bought about 500 metres of ribbon in various colours and sizes in a job lot on eBay for £8 including delivery, result!
  • Embellishments such as buttons, bows, stickers pegs and charms for example. Save these by taking them off cards and presents you’ve been given, and buy them from places such as Hobbycraft or eBay.
  • Old cards can also be given a new lease of life. If they had an insert you can often remove this and add a new one of your own (a blank piece of paper would work), or you could cut out parts of the card and use them as gift tags, or to make your own card.

You can also make your own envelope pouch from your stash of paper, perfect for small items such as jewellery, gift cards or money. Check out my easy, how-to tutorial here.

Top Tip

Find a box and put it all in there. Everything; put it all in one place. I use the Really Useful Boxes as they are perfect. They do A4 boxes which are great for cards and bits and pieces, and they do a long wrpapping paper box which fits rolls in, plus they are stackable.

Ready to go!

Now you’ve got a selection of items you can quickly create fabulous looking gifts. I created these at the last minute, using three types of paper from my Dovecraft ‘Sweet Paris’ collection.

I wanted to have colours which complimented each other yet contrasted in style. I like the mix of spots and stripes, put together neatly with a bright pink ribbon. For the card I went with a third pattern and a lighter coloured pink ribbon. I think the final result looks pretty neat. I hope you agree.

You can view the ‘Sweet Paris’ range of Dovecraft papers available on eBay, or the Dovecraft range at Hobbycraft.

Have fun putting together your stash of gift wrapping bits and pieces and start giving your gifts the wow factor.
