My new favourite craft!

I mention Pinterest a lot, because it is sooo good. It’s the first place I go to for new craft ideas, including these fabulous bookmarks. I came across various pins and it was love at first sight. They are very simple yet totally charming, so I just had to give them a go.

To start with I was worried about them being fiddly, and suffering with polyneuropathy I wasn’t sure I’d have the strength or dexterity for the job. But where there’s a will there’s a way and I wasn’t going to let that stop me! Using jewellery pliers which I could squeeze together with my whole hand meant I could fix the clamps ok, and pick up the charms with the pliers, yay! The first one or two took a while to get to grips with, literally, but I got there and looking at the finished result was really rewarding.

I loved making them so much that I made one for each family member for Christmas, wrapped them in tissue paper and popped them into one of my handmade envelope pouches (example and tuorial here).

They are also great for birthday presents, and are especially meaningful if you tailor the charms and give them to a book lover. I recently made a set of three, all with different charms, and packaged them in a fuschia pink bracelet box; they looked fabulous and were really well received.

I have made a few for myself and use them in various notebooks, as I am trying to start writing again to help strengthen my hands, and my husband now has his own Batman bookmark which he uses at work!

If you are now thinking of making your own bookmark be warned, once you make one of these beauties you won’t want to stop!

Ready to make your own?

You will need:

  • Ribbon
  • Ribbon end clamps (lots of colours available such as silver, gold, antique bronze)
  • Jump rings (in a matching colour to the end clamps)
  • Charms, pendants or beads
  • Jewellery pliers

Apart from the ribbon, everything can be found from jewellery making suppliers, of which there are plenty online. It is really important to use jewellery pliers; you won’t be able to make these without them. I picked up a cheap set of 5 for about £10 from eBay and they have served me well, and I tend to only use two of them.

I worked out how to make these myself, so that means they must be pretty straight forward! You just need the right tools and a little bit of patience – something I am finally starting to acquire after thirty something years!

In short, you need to buy the ribbon end clamps in the same width as your ribbon, then insert the ribbon into the jaws of the clamp and close tightly with the jewellery pliers. You can then add a jump ring and a charm or pendant and your bookmark is complete.

I am planning on putting together a step-by-step tutorial, and will post it soon. Feel free to leave a comment though if you have any questions in the meantime.
